Mirror Mirror is an artwork that discusses Roma art. Based on models of “reflection” between these two artists—one Roma and one non-Roma—a work is presented in the form of a lecture-performance. The format suggests the delivery of two academic papers, which reflect upon Gypsy art from two theoretical positions: American semiotics and social anthropology. Within and alongside these apparent lectures are visual and performative elements that tease out a number of aesthetic and political issues concerning Roma people through cultural representation. Images of UK Romany artists’ work are projected, including Suzye Llwyd (also known as Killi Mengri), Celia Baker, Jim Hayward, Simon Lee, and Paula Stanford. These works include drawings, sign writing, sculpture, flower making, and textiles. Material ephemera are also employed during the lectures, and are left behind in the Pavilion for display. DANIEL BAKER (born 1961) is an artist, curator, researcher, and activist. He holds a PhD from the Royal College of Art, London on the subject of Gypsy aesthetics. Baker’s artistic practice examines the role of art in the enactment of social agency through performance, installation, painting, and digital media and his work can be found in collections across Europe, America, and Asia. Recent curatorial projects include: No Gorgios (together with Paul Ryan), Novas Gallery, London, 2007. Recent exhibitions include: Sovereign European Art Prize, Barbican Art Gallery, London, 2010; Suspect, Galerie Feinkost, Berlin, 2009; and Paradise Lost. The First Roma Pavilion, 52nd Venice Biennale, Venice, 2007. His publications include: Ex Libris (2009). Baker lives and works in London.

PAUL RYAN (born 1968) is an artist and curator. He holds a PhD from the University of the Arts London, London, researching the hierarchies of making, collecting, and exhibiting. His practice revolves around the sketchbook, extending to collaboration, performance and installation. Recent curatorial work includes: What the Folk Say, Compton Verney, Warwick, 2011; and Manual Setting, Danielle Arnaud, London, 2011. Recent exhibitions include: Drawing: Interpretation/Translation, Hui Gallery, Chinese University, Hong Kong, 2011; and What Are Feelings For?, Centre for Drawing, Wimbledon College of Art, London, 2007. Ryan lives and works in London.
